Why are we talking about supplementation? Because families are doing this all the time. Barbara and Barb discuss the ins and outs of supplementation. When is it necessary, and when might it not be necessary? We also discuss how to appropriately supplement a baby, if it is, in fact, needed. Sometimes we can give babies extra food when we don’t need to, and sometimes we may need to if they need it. Knowing the facts about supplementation is important so you can understand the process and the possible pros and cons.
We know that babies need about 2.5 oz per lb of their weight after day 10 or so until they reach about 10 lbs; then the amount of food babies need plateaus at about 24-25 oz on average. We do expect babies to lose weight for the first three days or so. But then, we expect them to gain, ON AVERAGE, about 1 oz per 24 hours for the next 14 weeks or so.
