We had our first FREE live study group on Saturday, September 12th, 2026, at 11:00 AM ET with Dr. Helen Ball. This is the first of a series where we get together after reading one or more studies on a topic and, well, discuss them! We were very lucky to have one of the authors join us!
The topic was Baby Wearing. For this first group, we read two articles. Lovell-Kennedy, S. R., Strong, R. L., Grieve, L. M., & Ball, H. (2026). Safety and benefits of adult-worn slings and baby carriers: a narrative systematic review to inform guidance for parents. BMJ Paediatrics Open. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjpo-2026-004693 and then Strong, R., Lovell-Kennedy, S., Grieve, L., & Ball, H. (2026). Adult-worn sling and baby carrier safety: exploring parental practices, knowledge and information needs. BMJ Paediatrics Open. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjpo-2026-004696
Some of the take-home ideas were:
- Families don’t have enough information (and want more) on baby wearing and how to do it safely.
- Babies are at risk of asphyxiation primarily in the first four months before babies have better trunk and head control.
- No peer-reviewed research has examined when and why parents choose to use AWSC, or how they access safety information and support.
- Manufacturers provided little safety guidance, and many parents were unaware of specialist resources (eg, sling libraries).
