Milk banking? What is it, and why does it matter? Barbara was lucky enough to talk to LactaLearning’s medical director, Dr. Miena Hall.
So, why milk banking?
As we know, “human milk provides essential nutrition for infants and offers many health benefits for infants and mothers. When a mother’s own milk is not available for her infant, the World Health Organization recommends feeding donor human milk (DHM) from a human milk banking facility. DHM is human milk produced, collected, and then donated to a human milk bank (HMB)…The first HMB opened in 1909, and today there are more than 700 HMBs globally.” https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11184569/
- Worldwide: More than 700 human milk banks operate across more than 37 to 60 countries.
- Europe: Leads globally with over 210 active human milk banks (notably in countries like France, Italy, and Sweden).
HMBANA Members: The Human Milk Banking Association of North America accredits more than 30 nonprofit milk banks across the United States and Canada.
- Output: These regional member banks dispensed a record 13 million ounces of pasteurized donor human milk in 2025. [1]
