This morning I (Nancy Mohrbacher) spoke with a mama who thought her baby’s coughing and sputtering at the breast meant she had overactive let-down (OALD). She started block feeding—but here’s the thing: not every baby who struggles with milk flow needs this strategy.

👶 What is Block Feeding?
Block feeding = offering only one breast for a set block of time (3+ hours). It helps when moms are making way too much milk (oversupply).

✅ Block Feeding Can Help When:
- Baby is gaining double or more the average weight (about 2 lb/month in the first 3 months).
- Mom’s breasts are painfully full, leaking, or prone to plugged ducts.
- Used for no longer than 1 week.

❌ Block Feeding Can Backfire When:
- Baby’s weight gain is average or below.
- Baby’s sputtering is due to normal newborn learning (suck–swallow–breathe takes practice!).
- Oversupply is assumed without confirming weight gain.

Alternatives:

👉 Try gravity-friendly positions (like laid-back breastfeeding) to give baby more control over flow.

👉 If struggles continue, connect with an IBCLC lactation consultant to rule out anatomy or feeding issues.

Every mom + baby pair is unique. What works for one may not be right for another. If you’re unsure whether block feeding is safe for your situation, seek expert guidance before making changes.
