When you think about a ‘good latch’, what come When you think about a ‘good latch’, what comes to mind? Ultimately, a good latch results in the parent being comfortable and the baby transferring plenty of milk. Things we look for to assess a good latch are:
🤱 The latch is deep, meaning the baby has a mouth full of breast tissue and isn’t just sucking on the nipple.
🤱 Baby’s chin is off their chest and they are having deep chin drops. Try swallowing with your chin on your chest - it's hard! Having the chin off the chest is the natural feeding position for babies.
🤱 The parent feels no pain
🤱 Baby is able to transfer plenty of milk. Often we can see or hear the baby swallowing during the feed. Other ways you can assess transfer at home are whether the breast gets softer during the feed and the baby seems satisfied after nursing.

If you are a lactation professional or an aspiring lactation support person and want to learn more about latching and positioning, as well as how to better support the families that you work with, consider our 95 hour CCLS course. Our group training or self paced CCLS course can help you take the next step toward becoming a lactation professional, or improving your skills!

The Clinical and Communication Lactation Specialist, CCLS, is a certificate for those who complete our group training 95 hour course. For many, this certificate is a stepping-stone towards certification as an IBCLC.

Let’s celebrate! The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Ac Let’s celebrate! The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act was signed into law on December 29, 2022 and makes some significant changes to the Break Time Law passed in 2010. The Break Time for Nursing Mothers law required “employers to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom space for breastfeeding employees to pump during the work day.” The problem was nearly 1 in 4 women of childbearing age were not covered by this law.

The changes to the PUMP Act:
✅ Provides the right to break time and space to pump breast milk at work to millions more workers, including teachers and nurses
✅ Makes it possible for workers to file a lawsuit to seek monetary remedies in the event that their employer fails to comply
✅ Clarifies that pumping time must be paid if an employee is not completely relieved from duty

Hooray for increased support and protection for breastfeeding and working parents! This is *one* step toward better legislation for breastfeeding parents. Another thing to celebrate is that the PUMP Act is “the first standalone breastfeeding bill to receive a recorded vote on the House and Senate floors. The bill received incredible support from policymakers on both sides of the aisle, demonstrating that breastfeeding is truly a bipartisan issue.” Thank you to all the organizations and individuals who worked hard to pass this law!
