How does high BMI affect breast anatomy and milk production? This fascinating cross-sectional Australian study used health histories and ultrasound to find out. See what they discovered about BMI, number and size of milk ducts, blood flow in the breast, and milk production:

🔹 Limited breast growth during puberty and pregnancy was linked to fewer and smaller milk ducts, correlating with lower milk production.
🔹 Higher maternal adiposity was associated with minimal pregnancy breast growth and reduced 24 h milk production, despite larger breast volume.
🔹 Body composition (not BMI alone) provides a more accurate predictor of lactation potential.
🔹 Parity, hormonal contraception, and menstrual cycle return also showed relationships with ductal anatomy and milk production.

These findings reinforce the importance of supporting healthy maternal body composition and early breast development to optimize lactation outcomes.
